The Mindset of An Effective Leader

I understand that each of us have different impressions about who a leader is. And many of us also have some misconceptions about the leader; however, in is short article, I want to share with you something I consider to be very central to leadership, and strategically crucial to every leader who is thriving to become an effective leader.

Leadership is not peculiar to anyone, race, religion or gender. We are all created leaders; however, we all grow up to be either effective leaders or ineffective leaders. It has been said that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and like leadership, you are a leader whenever you see yourself as one. It is as simple as that!

Even if the whole nation - let say, Nigeria call you their leader; that does not make you a leader. You become a leader the moment you think you are one. Therefore, title or position notwithstanding, anyone can become a leader; and any willing man or woman can become an effective leader.

Sometime ago in Israel, while Jesus was speak to a large crowd, He said, "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep...........My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." (Book of John 10:14 & 27). Did you see something fundamental there? Remember, I stated earlier that titles or positions does not really make anyone a leader; that you only become a leader whenever you think or believe you are one. In those quoted words, we see very clearly that no one made Jesus a leader. He was a leader by Himself. He said, "I am the good shepherd.....". Sometime ago, Rev. Funky Felix-Adejumo of the Agape Ministries International (based in Akure, Nigeria) said, "If you do not 'I AM', nobody will say, 'THOU ART'". The implication of what she said is, until you call yourself someone, nobody will call you somebody. That is the truth!

Jesus believed that He was THE good shepherd, and He also believed that His sheep knows His voice, just as He knows His sheep. What an effective leader! King Solomon wrote sometime ago, "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he..." (Proverbs 23:7). It is your mindset that makes you a leader (not your connection or certificate); and it is the same mindset that can make you an effective or an ineffective leader.
Now let us see the mindset of the effective leader:

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?”
Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.”
Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!”
Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
John 13:3-8

The contemporary impression about a leader is one who is served; one who commands the obedience of his followers; and one who is in charge! Corporate leaders live large lives and they are continually served by their people. However, Jesus had a different mindset! When He was most celebrated by the people, He was the most servant of the people! When the people saw Him as the Son of God, He saw Himself as On who must serve His people. The point is, He wanted to wash the feets of His followers, something no leader in Nigeria, USA, Britain, Spain, China, Korea or Ghana would want to do. Peter, like many people felt it was not going to be possible; so, he said, Jesus would never wash his own feet. Then Jesus told him, "....If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." Did you see that? The mindset of an effective leader is that they want to (and love to) be e first to serve!

In our society today, an average person (male or female) wants to be served first. An average person believes that people should help him or her first, people should support him first, people should treat him or her well first - then, he or she can not reciprocate the kind gesture. As common as that may be, it is not a leadership mindset! True leaders don't just want to do something, they want to lay quality examples of doing it. When an effective leader want you to carry some chairs from one location to another; he or she would just come to carry those chairs; and would keep carrying them until your are inspired enough to join him or her. You see, leadership is not about giving out orders or commands, it is about inspiring actions and commitments. True leaders don't tell people to go forward; they go forward, then the people join them.

Leaders are pioneers of works, ideas, efforts, discipline, sacrifice, toughness, pain, etc.; their people only come over to join them overtime. The question now is, "Do you have the mindset of an effective leader, or you are just trying to be a leader?"
